Totnes
Originally a fortified Saxon settlement, Totnes grew in importance during the medieval and Elizabethan periods as a port exporting Dartmoor wool and tin. Today it is a bustling town with regular street markets and an assortment of arts, crafts and organic produce shops. There are many fine 16th and 17th century buildings and the castle is a classic example of a Norman fortification.
