Eastwrey Barton Country House

History

Eastwrey Barton was originally East Wrey Farm, dating back to the 18th century. Granite posts now mark the entrance to the old driveway, through what is now the garden, leading to the front entrance. The features of the old dairy can still be seen in the current walk in larder. The original building was extended in the mid 19th century before the sun rooms were added in the early 20th century. Eastwrey Barton has been a hotel since the 1950’s. Throughout its long history it is still served by a spring in the garden, providing pure fresh drinking water.

Guest reception rooms and services

Our guests are very welcome to enjoy our reception rooms. There is plenty of space for both quietness and privacy and for enjoying meeting other guests.

Our dining room is a lovely sunny room overlooking the patio to the gardens and the stunning view beyond.

Adjoining the dining room is a games room with a round rosewood table ideal for playing cards and our selection of board-games. We can put out our half-size snooker table if our guests fancy a game of snooker or pool. There is also a large framed wall map for planning days out on Dartmoor.

Through the games room is our cosy bar with comfortable chairs and fireplace and doors leading out to the patio. We are licensed to serve drinks throughout the day and evening. Guests can enjoy an evening drink in front of the fireplace or take drinks out to the patio on return from a day out walking on Dartmoor.

There is a guest sitting room with comfortable sofas in front of a wood burner. On the coffee table there are numerous books, maps and magazines providing information on the local area, as well as newspapers for guests to read. Here we like to serve tea and home-made cake for guests on arrival.

Through the sitting room is our favourite sun lounge which also looks out to the garden and the view beyond. We like to enjoy having a cup of tea or coffee here, so we are sure our guests do too. There are a selection of books for guests to read, as well as an electric piano that guests are welcome to play.

On arrival, and on returning after a day out, guests are offered tea and home-made cake in our sitting room.

We love to offer advice on exploring Dartmoor and the local area. We are available each early evening to help you plan your next day.

Outside facilities

We have a large, private car park allowing space for up to 10 cars.

The gardens cover 1.5 acres and provide a number of places to sit and enjoy the peace. There is a large patio where guests can enjoy drinks from the bars. We have a small old pond which contains several happy fish and is surrounded by old moss-laden granite stone and planters, and is served by a small stream flowing through. There are lots of flowering shrubs and a number of magnificent trees of many kinds. Our favourites are two large copper beeches which can be spotted when approaching us along the Wray Valley. It won’t be long until a tree swing is installed! Until then, children will enjoy rolling down the grassy slopes, or as we have done, some sledging in the snow.

We provide a lockable cellar for bicycles and other outdoor gear, easily accessible from the lower side of the house, along with cycle washing and maintenance equipment.
